I’ve long held a dream of running my own company, and that dream became a reality last year with the start of my consulting company. For the first year it has basically been a sole proprietorship, with me wearing every hat that the company needed to get the job done. The past couple months I’ve been working to lay the groundwork to make all that change.
I have relationships built with other companies in the technology space to offload some of the service efforts, I have a sales person starting in two weeks, and the offerings that we have are mature and proven. I really do feel like I’m becoming less of a technician running a company, and more like a business owner running a technology company.
Don’t get me wrong, I love technology, and I love working with my clients. But I have a vision, I have a desire, and neither of which would work with me being a sole employee shop. The technology support field is too needy, and I really could never see myself with a high quality of life if I don’t begin to trust in others to perform some of the day to day tasks that will keep the company running.
I’m extremely excited about the idea of simply becoming a visionary and opportunity maker. I want to get to the point where I can get out and meet people, and develop a relationship to hand over to my team and have them get the job done, while continuing to build the future vision for the company and making sure we all have jobs tomorrow.
I know there are a lot of guys out there that have been in my position (and some have read this blog at least once), and would love to hear some advice for this young entrepreneur about moving from being a sole proprietor to the head of a real company.
